Mani Peninsula Loop.

Mani, usually called “the Mani”, is in the Peloponnese Province, the southernmost region of mainland Greece. Looking at a map, you will see that the Peloponnese has three legs in the south. Mani is the middle one.

The Mani is generally divided into the Messinian Mani and the Lakonian Mani. The Messinian Mani starts southeast of city of Kalamata and runs south between the coast and the Taÿgetos Mountain, while the Lakonian Mani covers the rest of the peninsula south of Itilo. Heading further south, the way goes all the way to Cape Tainaron, the southernmost point of mainland Greece.

There’s something indefinably special about the Mani area of Greece. It has a wild, untamed nature to it. A wild, rugged beauty.

From the steep foothills of the snow-tipped Taÿgetos Mountain to the pristine coastal coves, and from the tiny villages nestling amid olive groves, connected by threads of walking trails, to the arid landscapes in the south of peninsula, Mani gives to the visitor a feeling of being literally at the edge of the world. An undiscovered world.

This remote, arid area is incredibly dramatic. From a historical point of view, Mani is supposed to be the place where the Greek Independence War seems to have started in 1821.

The people from Mani, have always been rough, proud and independent. They had been known to be rebellious and free spirits a long time before the Revolution.

After all, Mani’s remote, wild landscape is one of the best places to explore in Greece if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet, historical and authentic place.

Evia Private Tours organises regularly tours in the Mani and the surroundings like Gytheio, Areopoli, Gerolimenas, Diros Caves and Cape Tainaro.
